Santa Barbara Policy Advocate

Associate Policy Director

CAUSE builds people power from the grassroots up.  We are a leader in community organizing and advocacy in the Central Coast of California.  We believe real change comes from building the power, voice, and leadership of those directly affected by issues to address their root causes: from organizing farmworkers for better conditions in the fields, to bringing together tenants to demand housing affordability, to building youth leaders to fight for a healthy environment.  We focus on organizing our local communities through face-to-face relationship-building on the ground at the neighborhood level to make systemic change, and are connected with statewide and national movements where we sharpen our analysis, learn best practices, and build community.

The Central Coast is our home.  Our region’s peaceful coastlines, iconic mountains, and beautiful climate are part of what we fight for.  They also make our community an ideal place to live and work.  As you grow your career here, you can enjoy the Central Coast’s year-round fresh produce, wild open space and hiking trails, calm sunny beaches, and laid-back communities.  Find culture and community in the Central Coast’s majority people of color population and deep Latinx roots, while exploring the many hidden gems of historic towns along the coast, each with their own unique flavor.

We believe community organizing and advocacy is a professional career, not just a job.  We know that we can build stronger and more transformative social movements lasting generations if we value our own sustainability and take care of our people.  We provide excellent work/life balance with our flexible work-hours and hybrid schedule, paid sabbaticals, paid family leave, up to 42 days of paid time off per year, and staff union contract.  We invest in great benefits including medical and dental insurance that starts on day one with dependents fully covered and zero employee contribution, as well as an Employee Assistance Program, annual professional development budget, and retirement contribution.  Over 80% of our senior team got their start as junior staff, and we pride ourselves on leadership development and career mobility for our team.

At CAUSE, we don’t just talk about issues, we get results.  We’ve raised wages and working conditions for thousands of working families, passed protections against unfair evictions and rent increases for hundreds of thousands of tenants, and defeated some of the largest corporations in the world to stop polluting projects and create healthier neighborhoods.  Being part of the CAUSE team means walking through your community and seeing bus routes, parks, and affordable housing that exist today because of our work organizing ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
